Simpler Recycling - One Year Until New Rules Apply

Factory Image

All businesses in England must follow new Simpler Recycling rules, introduced by the government to make recycling more consistent and reduce waste. For businesses in Breckland, this means there are changes to how you manage your recyclables and food waste.

This blog explains what's changing, what your business needs to do, and how these changes will affect everyone across Breckland; Watton, Dereham, Attleborough, Thetford, and Swaffham.

What Is Simpler Recycling?

Simpler Recycling is a new government initiative that standardises what can be recycled across all homes and businesses in England. All businesses in Breckland will be legally required to separate three key waste streams:

  1. Dry Mixed Recycling
  2. Food Waste
  3. General Waste

When does it affect me??

  • By March 2025, compliance is required for businesses employing more than 10 FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) staff.

  • By March 2027, compliance becomes mandatory for all businesses, no matter their size.

Food Waste Collection in Breckland

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of separate food waste collections. If your business produces food waste, for example cafes, restaurants, schools, care homes, or offices with kitchen facilities you will be required to keep this waste separate from general waste. This also includes tea bags, coffee grounds, and lunch leftovers generated in a staff‑room environment.

Where will this apply?

Simpler Recycling collection services will be rolled out across the country, and here in Breckland we will be supporting all our businesses to become compliant. By starting preparations now, businesses in these towns can make a smooth transition.
